Next to the eye-catching "10,000-meter titanium alloy coiled tubing" sign, groups of visitors gathered around the 3-meter-high tube reel, touching and knocking on the titanium alloy pipes wrapped around it, and asking the booth staff about the process technology and its application scenarios. This was a scene at the 24th China International Petroleum and Petrochemical Technology and Equipment Exhibition held in Shunyi, Beijing recently.

"This roll of titanium alloy tube was developed by the company in conjunction with a number of domestic research institutes and enterprises. The R&D team has built a manufacturing and processing platform for titanium alloy coiled tubing, and independently developed core process equipment such as intelligent fully automatic adaptive plate coiled tubing precision forming, ultra-long time high-efficiency deep melting stable welding, etc. The entire manufacturing process is precisely controlled by computers, solving the problem of stable forming of ultra-long titanium alloy welds." Ye Xiongyue, general manager of Guangdong Fuweide Welding Co., Ltd., said in an interview with Science and Technology Daily.

With the continuous improvement of the exploration and development of medium and shallow oil and gas, the difficulty of oil and gas discovery is increasing, and the exploration and development of deep oil and gas and demanding energy wells are receiving more and more attention. With the advantages of light weight, high corrosion resistance, and high fatigue life, titanium alloy continuous oil pipes can be used as a substitute for steel continuous oil pipes and operate in deep layers, deep sea and other harsh environments. However, the relevant materials and preparation processes have been blocked by foreign countries for a long time.

In 2022, Guangdong Fuweide Welding Co., Ltd., together with China Petroleum Engineering Materials Research Institute, China Research Institute of Technology, Baoji Titanium Co., Ltd., Xinjiang Xiangrun New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. and other units, applied for the "Ultra-long Titanium Alloy Continuous Oil Pipe Development and Industrialization Research" project, which received national special support.

"The R&D team selected materials, overcame a series of technical difficulties, and formed a complete set of process technology for the preparation of titanium alloy continuous oil pipes. During the welding process, the ultra-long weld is stably formed, without beveling or filling welding wire, and can achieve single-sided welding and double-sided forming, greatly improving welding efficiency." Hui Songxiao, a titanium alloy expert at China Research Institute of Technology, introduced.

"The depth limit of the continuous oil pipe is affected by factors such as the weight of the oil pipe and the power of the processing vehicle." Hui Songxiao introduced that after the steel continuous pipe is lowered to a depth of 7,000 meters, the power of the processing vehicle will not be able to meet the operating capacity of the oil pipe due to the weight of the pipe. If it is longer, the weight of the steel pipe may break the pipe. The density of titanium alloy is only 60% of that of steel. In theory, it can extend the depth limit of the continuous oil pipe from 7,000 meters to more than 12,000 meters.

Hui Songxiao added that the depth limit of the steel continuous oil pipe can also be further extended, but the strength requirements of the steel material are relatively high. Correspondingly, the technical difficulty of steel strip production and continuous pipe forming will also increase. Excessive strength will cause the plasticity and toughness of the steel pipe to decrease significantly, seriously affecting the fatigue life of the continuous oil pipe. Lightweight titanium alloy materials can avoid these problems.

From 24 hours to 72 hours, 100 hours, 150 hours, 200 hours, 300 hours... The R&D team repeatedly conducted theoretical analysis, experimental verification and optimization iterations on many parameters that affect welding stability, and continuously extended the stable welding time of titanium alloy continuous pipes. So far, the continuous welding time has exceeded 500 hours, realizing the production and manufacturing of ultra-long (12,000 meters) titanium alloy continuous pipes. In addition, the R&D team conducted fatigue tests on titanium alloy continuous oil pipes under 8 MPa internal pressure and 35 MPa internal pressure. The data showed that its fatigue life is much higher than that of steel continuous oil pipes. "At present, ultra-deep wells of 8,000 to 10,000 meters have been explored in China, but there are no suitable continuous oil pipes for the time being." Ye Xiongyue introduced that in October 2023, the ultra-long titanium alloy continuous oil pipe industrialization project has started construction in Zhongshan, Guangdong, and it is expected that large quantities of ultra-long titanium alloy continuous oil pipes will help my country's oil and gas drilling and production in 10,000-meter deep wells.
